“Before Khvylovyi, the fortified wall of the Kharkiv fortress ran here and the Intercession Monastery was built (it has survived to this day). And with the beginning of the aggressive Russification of Kharkiv in the nineteenth century, the building of the Noble Assembly was erected here, which was later rebuilt into the office of the All-Union Central Executive Committee, and in 1934 the first Palace of Pioneers (designed by Vasyl Yermilov).

“After Khvylovyi,” during World War II, the building was destroyed, the square was called Soviet for a long time, and in 1975 a monument to the proclamation of Soviet power in Ukraine appeared on the site, which was immediately nicknamed ‘Five people taking a refrigerator out of a pawnshop’ for its compositional solution and location near a pawnshop. The monument was decommunized in 2015, and the Flying Ukraine Independence Monument was erected on the square (according to Kharkiv residents, this was how then-mayor Hennadii Kernes celebrated his election victory).

Throughout its history, this square in the old center of Kharkiv has been marked by those who considered themselves the masters of the city.

In the spring of 2022, Russian artillery shells hit the square, but did not cause significant damage.
